Tagalong Brownie Pie!

I seriously love this time of year. Not winter, not Super Bowl (but I like that, too) not Valentine's Day. Nope, you know what I'm talking about! GIRL SCOUT COOKIE TIME! I love me some Girl Scout Cookies! I can't turn them down. I think I ordered like 8 boxes from a girl in our neighborhood.

But those won't come in for a little while and since I JUST SO HAPPEN to have a friend who JUST SO HAPPENS to be a troop leader for a troop that JUST SO HAPPENS to be selling cookies NOW, well, I bought some more and her her ship 'em on down to me. :)

Now, I'm not the best baker and definitely not the best food photographer, but bear with me because you don't want to miss this. I was brainstorming ways to make desserts even more awesome and I came up with a few ideas that involved Girl Scout Cookies. Then I got in the kitchen to test one of those ideas out and today, I bring you:

Yeah, Buddy. You read that right. It's a pie, it's a brownie, it has Tagalongs... It's a Tagalong Brownie Pie!!! Squee!!!

Um, so delicious and so freaking easy. Here's how to make your own!

You will need:
1 box of brownie mix (plus whatever the package says you need)

1 graham cracker crust

1 box of Tagalongs

Mix the brownie batter according to package instructions. Friendly little tip here: splurge a little on the pasteurized eggs so you can finish off whatever batter doesn't fit into the pie shell. I ♥ brownie batter!

Add a layer of brownie batter to the bottom of your pie shell.

Top that with a layer of Tagalongs.

Add the rest of the brownie batter. (You could also just add a thin layer of batter, then another layer of Tagalongs and top it with batter, if you're feeling crazy!)

Bake according to package directions for an 8x8 pan. You will probably need to bake for about 10 minutes longer. Just stick a toothpick in and when it comes out mostly clean (not gooey), it's done!

This is the part that will kill you. Let it cool down for at least 30 minutes. I'm sorry. You can do it!

Then cut in and enjoy! It's super rich - you'll just want a small piece. Probably. And a glass of milk.

Ribbon Storage Station

I had such a great time competing on One Month To Win It! Thank you to everyone who went over and voted for your favorite projects. The auditions for Season 8 are in March, so mark it down on your calendars!

Furniture is kind of a big deal, so I was pretty nervous about this week. I had a lot of ideas and a hard time deciding. I wanted to make something I really needed. The ribbon in my craft room was a jumble of mass chaos, so a storage solution seemed like the perfect choice! I made a run to the home improvement store, dusted off our power tools and got down to business!

I used a couple of 1x6 lengths of wood (cut down to size at the store for free) and created a basic bookcase. I added a couple shelves near the bottom and drilled holes for dowel rods, which I capped off with wood finials. I finished it up by adding scraps of crown moulding at the top and bottom. I sanded the whole thing down and painted it.

On one side, I added corkboard, which I cut to fit. I also added a removable yard stick so I can easily measure the amount of ribbon I need without needing to remove the spool.

The dowels slide right out to easily swap out ribbon spools and I left plenty of space to add more rows as my collection grows. I added some jars to hold more supplies and a couple of baskets, which I labeled with chalkboard tags.

I absolutely love that all the things I need to work with my ribbon are all in once place! This was my first go at building custom furniture and I think I'm hooked! For less than $50, I built something that is exactly what I need with none of the stress of trying to find something that just kind of works for me.

And I LOVE seeing all my pretty ribbon lined up, ready to use!

Butterfly Valentine Printable

Well, as you all probably know by now, Picnik is closing down (moving to Google+?). I don't know about you, but I'm going to squeeze every last drop of use out of it.

This little idea popped in my head for a fun Valentine, so I whipped it up!

I created the art over in Picnik, printed it out, cut it down and added some butterflies I had punched out of scrapbook paper.

SO easy and free, because I already had everything on hand!

If you don't have a paper punch, you could draw a butterfly or use a stamp or stickers. These would be fun for the little ones to make, too!

Want to make your own? Just click on the picture to make it bigger, right click and save, and paste it into a word doc. You can adjust the size to suit your needs!

Macy Goes to the Fair Pennant Dress

I am so glad I made it through to Week 3 of One Month To Win It! I love, love LOVE this dress and am SO glad to know many others did, too.

Let me tell you, I have been most excited about this week since we got the list of themes. When I saw "Bunting and Banner Week", this idea immediately popped into my head!

Start with a simple white dress and add a tiny pennant-style banner and you have:

The Macy Goes to the Fair Dress!

I am beyond excited with how this turned out! If you're anything like me, you know that ideas in your head don't always translate well into real-life items, so when it does, it's like hitting the jackpot!

I started out with a pillowcase dress and altered the pattern to work for my idea. I added box pleats to the neckline which make me think of a Big Top at the fair. Then I made a mini pennant banner and trimmed the neckline with it. I finished off the neckline and arms with bias tape I handmade.

But of course I couldn't stop there! I cut out approximately 1 MILLION little bitty triangles (really, about 250) and stitched on 5 rows of the tiny pennant banner to the hem of the dress. I love it so much!

This dress is a great stash-buster project! All the little triangles were made from my scrap bag. The bias tape was made from fabric left over from another project. I love using things I have on hand!

Sidenote: The whole time I was working on this dress, "Macy" kept popping up in my head. This dress really did name itself!

You might have also noticed The Macy Bow in these pics. I had fun with this one! I added a few more elements than I usually do and love how it turned out.

Next time your favorite little girl needs a dress, don't run to the store! Go grab a pillowcase and a handful of scraps and see what you can come up with! :)

Thrift Store Table Makeover

I'm SO excited to have made it through to Week 3 of One Month to Win It! This is the project that got me through Week 2 (and just barely won the week)!

So, I was at the thrift store and I spotted this hideous table. It had good bones, but the hinges were all shoddy (pins were missing and replaced with Q-tips. Q-TIPS, people!!) and it was seriously not-my-style. But the price was low. They were practically giving it away. So I kept making my way back to it and finally decided (against my husband's pleas to please not bring anything else for the garage) to bring it home! And boy, am I glad I did!

I started out by removing the hinges, cleaning it up and sanding it down. Then I applied a couple coats of primer and allowed that to dry.

I painted the whole thing with DecoArt Designer Series All-Purpose Home Decor Acrylic in Lush Foliage. I LOVE this stuff. I put on just two coats and everything was completely covered! You know when you're making something and you get an endorphin rush because of how great it's turning out? DecoArt Designer Series in Lush Foliage = endorphin rush.

Once the paint was dry, I added brand new hinges and freehanded some polka dots on the top of the table and filled them in with DecoArt Traditions Artist acrylic in Warm White.

I gave it a day or so to dry and sprayed it with a poly coat.

The best part is that it was cheap! A little goes a long way with the DecoArt paints I used, so I still have several projects left out of them.

What do you think? Worlds better, right? I think it'll go perfectly in my craft room! :)

Revamped Chess Set

Now that voting is closed, I can share the project I did NOT enter in the competition. I fondly refer to this as my reject project. :)

I snagged this chess set from a friend and loved the scroll detail on the sides, but wanted something a little softer.

I decided on DecoArt Traditions Artist acrylics in Warm White and Aquamarine. I gave the black chess pieces a base coat of Warm White and repainted the board and white chess pieces in Warm White also. Once they were dry, I painted the black chess pieces with the Aquamarine and stenciled Aquamarine squares on the chess board. In real life, the color is greener, but it's pretty difficult to photograph.

*Quick tip: if you have small things to dry, stick some push pins into foam board and set the pieces on top - no more sticking to the surface!

Then I mixed DecoArt Traditions Glazing Medium with a little bit of black paint (little goes a long way!) and mixed in water to thin it out. I distressed the board and chess pieces with the Glazing Medium by painting it on with a foam brush and wiping it off with gauze. I am so happy with how the glazing brought out the scroll design!

To finish it off, I hit just the board with some spray adhesive and sprinkled a little bit of DecoArt Glamour Dust in Crystal over the top to girly it up a little bit.

Shabby French Ruffle Cuff/Headband

I made it through to the next round of One Month to Win It, probably by the skin of my teeth! Here is my project submission. Did you guess which one was mine?

I was so excited about this week's theme, cause let me tell ya, I love me some Graphics Fairy! The biggest challenge was narrowing down which graphics to use.

I settled on some sheet music and a fleur-de-lis and got to work on my Shabby French Ruffle Cuff!

First, I printed the graphics directly onto fabric using the freezer paper technique from The Scrap Shoppe. This was seriously SO easy! If you have an inkjet printer and didn't know you could print on fabric, head on over and let Michele tell you how it's done. I feel like I've been missing out!

Then I cut a strip of sheet music from the fabric and ruffled it up with my trusty sewing machine and added some lace & trim. To make the flower embellishment, I used the fleur-de-lis to cover a button and hot glued a bit of lace to the back. I cut out a couple flowers and inked the edges, then stacked it all up and stitched it to the cuff. I then added a length of black satin ribbon to each end and covered the back with a bit of black felt to finish it up! All done! :)

BUT WAIT! You didn't think that was all, did ya? This Shabby French Ruffle Cuff lives a secret double life as a Shabby French Ruffle HEADBAND! Just tie it around your head and you've got an accessory that pulls her own weight!

Santa Hat Tree

I don't know if you noticed the Santa hat tree in my Christmas mantle post, but I thought I'd work up a little tutorial in case you have some last minute decorating to do, or if you maybe wanted to, I don't know, pin it for next year. ;) This is so quick & easy. It took me literally minutes to make.

At this point, you can leave the bottom as-is or glue on a circle of felt.

There ya go! Easy as pie!

Tennessee Mantle Hop - Winter Edition

Believe it or not, in all the hustle and bustle, I found a few minutes to throw together a Christmas mantle! I used a few things I've gotten on after-Christmas clearance the past couple years and added in some handmade decorations.

There's the book page pom wreath that I made here. Plus some Zaney Jane's stockings! Some glittery words scavenged from a few different stores, a couple of ornaments sprinkled in, some from the dollar store, some vintage.

I whipped up this tree by wrapping some red felt around a styrofoam tree form and then wrapping some shabby fray flower trim on top of that. I secured it with straight pins so I can disassemble (does anyone else think of Johnny 5 every time they hear that word?) it later and use it for something else.

You'll never guess what I used to make the Santa hat tree! A styrofoam tree form and a Santa hat! You guessed it? Not that difficult, I suppose! :)

Travel Play Case

The holidays are upon us and with that means lots of travelling. It also means you're probably on a tighter budget with all the travel costs and gifts to buy. This is a great project to make for your own kids or to give as a gift! It's less than $5 and takes almost no time at all! Now let's get to it!

Now, if you're feeling a little ambitious, you can make your own little play scene with bits of scrapbook paper, like so:

I've added in some Littlest Pet Shop figurines, but you could use any you like. This is easily adjustable for different genders and ages!

Wrap it up in a bow and you're finished!

December Bow Sales Benefiting Cap Haitien Children's Home!

I love December! There are decorations to put up, gifts to buy and sweets to bake. Christmas shopping is one of my favorite things to do. It's so fun picking something out for someone that you think is perfect for them.

In all the hustle & bustle of the season, it's so easy to forget how truly blessed we are. I'm halfway through December and I have not yet made charitable giving a focus. That stops today!

Our friends Hunter & Jillian moved to Haiti to run the Cap Haitien Children's Home almost a year ago. They went there on a mission trip with no intentions of moving there and within months, they had quit their jobs and were headed to Haiti to save an orphanage. If you have five minutes, grab a box of tissues and head on over to their blog to read their story. You will not be sorry!

Christmas Traditions: Combining and Starting Our Own

I have the best memories growing up of waking up Christmas morning with my brother and sister and digging into our stockings while our parents were still asleep. Once they woke up, we'd all take turns opening gifts from Santa and each other.

My husband has fond memories of spending Christmas Eve with his family, opening gifts from each other and then waking up Christmas morning to see everything Santa brought laid out under the tree.

We both had different Christmas traditions. Even though we've been married for 6 1/2 years, we haven't really established our own traditions. Now that we have a baby, it's as good a time as any!

What we had:

First difference: He opened family gifts on Christmas Eve, I didn't. He really loved doing this because it spread the fun out over two days. I didn't have any particular attachment to opening everything on Christmas morning, so we decided to stick with his tradition there.

Second difference: All of our Santa gifts were wrapped. The suspense of not knowing what you got till you ripped the paper off was half the fun! He wasn't opposed to wrapped Santa gifts, so we decided to stick with my tradition there. :)

Now, here is what we have:

It's a short list and only the very beginning. I'm sure there will be advents and elves a-plenty to add in later!

Little Girl Pearls - crewcuts knockoff

Have you noticed how cute they make jewelry for little girls these days? It's not your plastic clip-on charms these days. Little girls of the 10s (the 2010s - it's a decade now, like the 80s!) are tres chic. They are like mini grown-ups. Little girls of the 10s are classy! They wear pearls! With this step up in fashion comes a step up in price. This stuff is adorable, but who can afford it?

But who needs to be able to afford it if you can MAKE it instead? :) That's just what I'm going to show you how to do. Let's knock off this adorable pearl necklace and bracelet set from the J. Crew line for kids, crewcuts.

First up, the Little Girl Pearls Bracelet

Here is the pattern I used to thread on the pearl beads:
1 large, 1 medium, 3 small, 1 medium,
1 large, 2 small, 2 medium, 5 small,

1 medium, 4 small, 1 medium, 3 small,

1 large, 1 medium, 3 small, 1 medium, 1 large

Easy, right? Also, you've got beads left over. Let's not stop now! We can use those leftover beads to create the matching necklace.

Little Girl Pearls Necklace:

Burp Cloths - Make It Work!

Sometimes I sit around dreaming up all the big fancy tools & machines I need to be able to make cute stuff. I bet you can relate!

I got some darling monogrammed burp cloths from my friend Ashley. I wanted to make some for baby gifts, but I don't have an embroidery machine. So, I made it work! I love how they turned out! (For the record, I don't have a die cut machine either - I just eyeballed the letters).

Now that we've got Halloween over with, it's time to get Christmas decorating, am I right? I've got a stash of books just begging to become awesome. So I obliged. Just in case you, too, have a sad little book hanging around that wants to become a wreath, here's how:

You will need eleventy billion glue sticks. That's not an exact number, just a ballpark figure.

Updated Tip: I put 2 or 3 sheets together to cut them and then separated them back out for the next step.

When I was done filling in gaps, I smacked a bow on that puppy and called it done!

Here it is hanging on a straight pin I stuck in the wall (um, don't tell my husband).

And here it is on my door. :)

My Halloween Mantle and the Tennessee Mantle Hop

Fall is in the air and nothing says "October" to me like pumpkins! I decided there was no better way to incorporate pumpkins into my decor than to create a little pumpkin patch on my fall mantle.

And what's more fun than seeing one Halloween mantle? How about FIVE of 'em?

Welcome to the Tennessee Mantle Hop - Fall Edition!

A few of us Tennessee bloggers got together recently and decided it would be fun to have a blog hop to show off our fall mantles. Check out Angie at The Country Chic Cottage for the previous stop!

And now I present to you:

The Pumpkin Patch!

I had so much fun turning my mantle into a temporary pumpkin patch.

If you know me, you know I love cheap & easy! This whole set-up cost me around $30 and I have supplies left over. We're also talking maybe an hour total of work time. I added in a few things I had on hand and I am very happy with my new fall mantle!

I started with a 2x4 ($2.30) from a home improvement store. I had them cut it (for free!) into 5 pieces: 12", 16", (two) 20" and 24". I spray painted all the pieces orange.

I picked up an assortment of decorative wood pieces from Michael's (did you know JoAnn stopped carrying wood crap? tsk tsk) and painted those with green acrylic paint for stems. Some pieces I glued together to make more of a statement. I then attached the stems to the pumpkins with a little E6000.

I used the same method with a few wood frames and plaques. Then I wrapped and tied on various scraps of ribbon and fabric to give it a little extra sumthin'.

I decorated an old wood frame with spray paint and rolled flowers and topped it with a bow "stem" for an instant pumpkin wreath.

I printed off a few graphics from The Graphics Fairy for my frames, and also used a few things I had on hand. I whipped up a quick paper shred garland by shoving paper shred through the sewing machine, one bunch at a time. I love how it looks under the pumpkins! It would also be cute in kraft brown, but I am a fan of the pop of green it adds to the whole shebang.

Then I strung up one of my scrappy ribbon garlands to top it all off.

I am seriously loving this mantle a little more every time I look at it! :)
Now to do something about those gold fireplace doors. Ack!

Candy Corn Brownies - TWO Ways!

It's October, which in my house means CANDY CORN BROWNIES!

I love them, I really do. I love brownies, I love candy corn and these just take it to a whole new level. :) I have posted about these previously, but I have a little revision for 2011, so I'm going to post both ways to make them for you. The first method is, in my opinion, the most delicious.

The Original Candy Corn Brownie

One box of brownie mix, made as directed

One bag of candy corn

Step 1: Make your brownies as directed on the package. 10 minutes BEFORE they're done, pull 'em out of the oven.

Step 2: Cover the brownies with candy corn and put back in the oven for the final 10 minutes.

The candy corn will get all melty and bubbly while the brownies finish cooking.

Step 3: As soon as you pull them out of the oven, swirl the melted candy corn around to create a top layer.

Let it cool and you're done!

Pros: super delicious, lots of candy corn

Cons: messy, not so pretty

SOME people (the crazy ones) think that much candy corn is overkill. Also, you have to serve these with the disclaimer "I know they look like a mess, but trust me, they're really good!"

Enter:

Candy Corn Brownies, 2011 Revision

Follow the instructions for the originals, but when you top it with candy corn, instead of just dumping the whole bag on top, carefully place a few candy corn in individual groups, like so:

Then put it back in the oven, but when you pull it out, don't swirl it up.

This makes them much easier to cut and a little lighter on the candy corn for those who can't take the heat.

I know you're probably thinking why even melt them? I could just sprinkle candy corn on top after the brownies are done baking. No. Trust me, some kind of magic happens when the candy corn melts that makes it super delicious.

Hair Band Tutorial

I am not one to throw out scraps, so I've been whipping up some hairbands out of my leftover headband material (aka FOE, aka fold over elastic). In my extensive research* I learned that these hairbands are better for your hair than your basic ponytail holder.

*By "extensive research" I mean I heard it somewhere a couple of times.

My friend Kenya saw one on my wrist recently and she was all "WHERE did you get that? I've been looking everywhere". And I was all "Girl, I MADE this!" Then, like many of the things I make, I insisted it was so easy and you could totally make this! Now, sometimes "easy" in my mind turns out not to be easy in reality, but I stand by my judgement on this. EASY. So easy it doesn't need a tutorial, but I made one anyway. So here ya go!

You will need:

Fold Over Elastic (I love this place and this place)

Scissors

Lighter

BAM! Done! See, that only took like a minute. Less if you're better at operating a lighter than I am. Plus it only cost pennies to make and they retail for $1-2 each. EACH! Highway robbery, I tell ya!

And if you're anything like me, your hair only sees a styling product once a week. The other 6 days, I can feel a teensy bit more chic with my didn't-take-a-shower-today-because-I-have-a-needy-baby ponytail. Yeah.

Spinach & Mushroom Omelet and Guacamole

I've been trying to kick those last few pounds of baby weight and My Fitness Pal has been tremendously helpful!

I have the app for my phone and here's how it basically works: you enter your current info and your goal and it gives you what your daily calorie intake should be. Then you log in everything you eat and it keeps track of the calories and nutritional intake. You can also log in exercise. Logging your food is easy because you can just scan the barcode and you can also create recipes. The added bonus is that you link up with your friends, so you can encourage each other. Don't worry, it doesn't show your friends what you eat. So the first couple days when you have, say two pieces of cake, cheese fries, coke and pizza, they won't know. :)

A chef I am not, but here is what I had for lunch. I scanned the barcodes of each ingredient to create the recipe. The best part is that it is filling and has 431 calories. Total!

Please excuse the lackluster food photography skills!

Spinach & Mushroom Omelet
Total calories: 166
1 egg (I use Eggland's Best)
1/2 cup sliced mushrooms
1 cup baby spinach
1 slice American cheese
about 1 tbsp of skim milk

Spray a small frying pan with cooking spray and sautee the mushrooms. Once they're almost done, throw the spinach on top and cover with a lid. While the spinach is cooking down, beat 1 egg with the milk. Pour this over the spinach & mushrooms. Once the egg sets, flip it over. You can use a plate to make it pretty, or if you don't care what it looks like (me!) just flip it with a spatula. Once both sides are cooked, put the cheese on top, cover with a lid and turn the burner off.

Easy Guacamole
Total calories: 125
1/2 avocado
dash of:
lemon juice
cayenne pepper
onion salt
garlic salt

Mash all that together. Done. Serve with tortilla chips (140 calories).

I just realized I hadn't shared my display from the consignment sale yet, so thar she blows!

I mixed things up a little bit, added in some flower clips and the headbands I've been posting about. I love consignment sales. Love. For less than 100 bucks, I've gotten TONS of clothes for the wee one. Several footed sleepers, about a dozen outfits, 6 pairs of pants, sweaters, onesies, shirts, dresses. It's crazy. When I go shopping now, I think about what I could get the same thing for at a consignment sale. It gives me anxiety to pay full price for something. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing! We're not using bibs yet, but before the little tike arrived, I whipped some out real quick. No, seriously. They each took about 20 minutes, and that's including ironing.

I pulled some scraps and leftover fabric and mixed and matched to my heart's content. I used this tutorial from Chickpea Sewing Studio - it was so simple! Now we've got a little stack of cute, fun bibs! :)

Guest Post: Personalized Child's Art Display from The Scrap Shoppe

Hi everyone! My name is Michele, and I create over at The Scrap Shoppe.

I use my blog to share interesting craft techniques, craft projects that catch my eye, and give you some fun freebies that you can download and use in your own crafting. And I also share a creation of my own each week which often includes a full tutorial so you can try it yourself.

I'm so happy to be guest posting at Sunny Tuesday! Jessica was kind enough to guest post for me during my bloggy maternity leave, and nothing pleases me more than to be able to return the favor for her so she can spend time with her precious new little one.

Today I want to share with you a fun way to showcase your child's artwork and make it personal to them at the same time!

I started my project by taking two wooden knobs and spray painting them black. I wanted to decorate the knobs so I used my Silhoutte to cut out a chevron pattern on white vinyl.

I used a circle cutter to round the corners of the chevron then applied them to the knobs.

To personalize the art display, I printed out "GAVIN'S ART" on black vinyl and put the negative image on black ribbon (don't forget the little inside pieces of the A's and R!). I wanted to be sure there wouldn't be any bleeding under the vinyl stencil so I pressed the vinyl down thoroughly.

(I'm definitely saving the lettering I didn't use for a future project. Bonus!)

I used white acrylic paint for my letters so it would really pop on the ribbon. And to further minimize any of the paint bleeding under the stencil, I dabbed the paint directly on top of the vinyl. No brushing!

Have you seen the new 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips? I think they are the best.idea.EVER!

I decided to use them to hang my knobs on the wall by trimming them down to size so they will fit on the back of the knob. Obviously I'm not using them as they were meant to be used, but now I don't have to put a hole in my knobs to hang them!

I tied each end of the ribbon to a knob. This way I can place the knobs on the wall in precisely the correct place to stretch my ribbon out fully. That's the anal in me... ;)

Perfecto!

Now I just need something to use to hang my son's art!

I grabbed some clothespins, Mod Podge, and scrapbook paper.

Now I'm ready to hang some art! And my toddler loves it in his room!

Freezer Paper Onesies

When my BFF, Aubrey found out she was having a boy, I started coming up with cute ideas to make onesies. I love using the freezer paper stencil technique - SO many possibilities!

Kellan's nursery has a pirate theme, so I knew I'd make a onesie with skull & crossbones. Aubrey moved all the way across the country a few months ago and I know she's been a little homesick, so I stenciled one with Tennessee so she can have a little piece of home with her on the West Coast. And the mustache, I just liked.

If you haven't tried out freezer paper stenciling - do it! It's easy and fun!

Chocolate Covered Pretzels

I initially posted this tutorial over at The Scrap Shoppe in April and now I'm bring it on over here to you! If you love simple and yummy, this is the thing for you!

I'm going to share with you how to make gourmet candy pretzels! I recently made these as hostess gifts for my baby shower and they were a huge hit! Enough talk, let's get down to the nitty gritty:

Stuff you'll need:

Pretzels: I used Snyder's Old Tyme pretzels. They're the perfect size and thickness.
Chocolate almond bark
White chocolate chips
Toppings: Heath toffee chips, sprinkles, crushed oreos, crushed M&Ms and crushed Reese's Pieces (or whatever floats your boat!
Colored candy melts (I used pink)
Wax paper
A bowl or dish for dipping the pretzels
Various kitchen utensils (fork, rubber spatula)

Step 1: Melt your chocolate.

Put your chocolate in a glass bowl or dish and microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until melted through and smooth.

Step 2: Dunk your pretzel.

Put your pretzel in the dish and push it down so it's fully coated in chocolate.

Step 3: Drain the excess chocolate.

Pull the pretzel out with a fork or tongs and allow the extra chocolate to drip off.

Step 4: Place pretzel on wax paper.

This can get messy.

Step 5: Sprinkle!

Sprinkle the topping of your choice on your chocolate covered pretzel before the chocolate sets. OR you can drizzle another coating over the pretzel. This, too, can get messy!

Once your pretzels have set up, you can take them off the wax paper and plate them up. If you're giving them as a gifts, stack them up in a clear cellophane treat bag and tie with ribbon.

Go crazy with the combinations! From top to bottom, my combinations are:

1. Chocolate covered, drizzled with pink candy coating

2. Candy coating covered with sprinkles

3. Chocolate covered with Reese's Pieces

4. Plain, drizzled with chocolate, white chocolate and candy coating

5. Chocolate covered with sprinkles

6. White chocolate covered with Oreos

7. Chocolate covered with M&Ms

8. Chocolate covered with Heath toffee bits

Do you remember who taught you to craft? My grandma is my crafty hero. She taught me to sew and she was resourceful and thrifty. When people tell me I'll never have time to make stuff when I have a baby, I usually mention my grandma, who had NINE kids and still found time to sew. Even outside of crafting, she was the kind of person you wanted to be.

Daniel and I decided years ago that if we had a daughter, we'd name her Eleanor for Grandma.

One of my favorite things in the nursery is this dress. My grandma made it and my mom wore it as a baby. It's amazing that it's still in such great condition - my mom was the third of seven girls!

I love that my mom saved this. It's perfect for Ellie's room, made by the woman she was named after.

Button Frame

When decorating the nursery, I really tried to be as thrifty as possible, using things I already had on hand. This frame (inspiration here) is a great example of thrifty - I didn't have to buy a thing!

I used a frame that I'd picked up at a thrift store last year (you may remember it from this post). I used paint leftover from the hairbow organizer, buttons from my stash and muslin from my grandma's stash. It was a super quick project and I love how it turned out!

She Has Arrived

Our little bundle of joy arrived last Monday, May 9th weighing in at 9 lbs, 12.5 oz! We're doing great settling into life with a baby. I'll be MIA for a little while, but don't worry - I've scheduled some posts to keep you entertained. It's going to be a baby overload!

We're at the Top of the World

At the very beginning of our relationship, Daniel and I used to drive around our tiny college town in his truck, listening to music. The Juliana Theory got a lot of airtime in the truck. One of the songs we'd play over and over was "Top of the World". It means a lot to us, but it also reminds us of the wonderful group of friends we have. Daniel and his friends have been to see the band several times and his best friend even used the song in his wedding. This song is the epitome of "happy". I need to fill this frame for the nursery and thought it was the perfect sentiment for how we feel about welcoming a new member into our family.

I whipped this up on the laptop and sent it off to Walgreens for an 8x10 print. I painted a frame I had on hand and had a mat cut at JoAnn. Here are a couple copies if you'd like to do the same. Just click on the pic to make it bigger, right click and save.

Rose Pomander Mobile

When I was planning out the nursery, I knew I wanted to go with something different for the mobile. While browsing blogs for inspiration, I happened upon these crepe paper rose pomanders and knew they'd be perfect!

I initially planned on making six and hanging three at each end of the crib. Once I got everything else up on the wall, I knew six would be overkill. I had already completed five at that point and really didn't want those last two to go to waste, so I stuck 'em on the shelves. I think they work, don't you?

Nautical Bunting Quilt

I saw this quilt and knew I had to make one! I just so happened to be taking part in a baby gift swap and my swap partner, Nikki was doing a nautical theme for her little guy. So this was perfect!

I used a lot of fabrics from my stash and picked up a few quarters from the fabric store as well. Because I used a solid navy back, I wanted to punch up the binding, so I made my own from a red and white polka dot calico using this tutorial.

And then I added an anchor applique because you can't have a nautical theme without an anchor!

Hair Bows Are Cuter On Heads - Giveaway!

I recently listed some of my bows in my etsy shop. I did the best I could taking pics of the bows, but everyone knows a bow is never at its personal best until it's on the head of a little girl. And since my little girl isn't here yet and will likely have no hair once she is, I had to figure something else out!

Nursery In Progress No Longer!

And we're done! I'm SO happy with how the nursery turned out! I used some vintage floral sheets I had for inspiration. If you're looking for a way to decorate while keeping costs down, this is a great way to do it! About 6 yards of fabric for $2-4. You can't beat that!

I made the curtain swag above the crib and hung it with some knobs found at Hobby Lobby. Curtain swag, name bunting, ruffled curtain, lovey blanket, crib sheets and crib skirt (inspiration) all were made using vintage floral sheets.

Most of the stuff on the walls I painted/distressed. The little rocking chair is one I had as a wee one, with a new coat of paint.

The quilt on the back of the glider was my baby quilt, made by my grandmother.

I need to fill the frames with pics! I painted the "E". Doll, bunny and piggy bank were mine.

That dress is what we'll bring the baby home in!

Nursery In Progress: Name Bunting

Little by little, I'm getting things ticked off my to do list. This weekend, I'll be working on getting everything up on the walls. And by "I", of course I mean "Daniel". :)

I made this to go over the crib using the same fabrics as the curtain. I've actually used these in quite a few other things in the room.

Nursery In Progress: Ruffled Curtain

When I saw this ruffled curtain, I knew I had to somehow incorporate it into my house. When we found out Little One was a girl, I had the perfect spot!

I'm going with a shabby chic theme in the nursery and trying my best to use what I've got on hand. Luckily, I have a nice little collection of vintage sheets (some of which are now fat quarters listed in my shop). I mixed and matched and added and edited until I was happy.

I used my ruffler foot for the first time. I broke my first two needles. We got in our first fight, the ruffler foot and I, but we made up. I used four different vintage sheets (which have so far also found their way into a crib skirt, bunting, crib sheets and a lovey) and added in some eyelet from my Grandma's stash.

It's a little on the narrow side, but there's no fixing that now, so I'm just going to pretend it fits! :)

Scrappy Ribbon Garland

A few weeks ago, I sold some bows in a consignment sale. I displayed them on white pegboard, and I knew it would look orderly and colorful, but I still felt the need to punch up the display.

If you know me, you know my favorite kinds of crafts are simple and not time-consuming. I also love using what I have on hand whenever possible! I had a ton of ribbon scraps left over from making the bows, so I got a pile out and started sewing. It's that easy - just keep feeding scraps through your presser foot until your garland is the length you want!

Stitch a length of ribbon at each end to string it up and you're done!

My First Consignment Sale!

Our church held our first consignment sale this weekend. When the organizers asked me if I wanted to be the bow lady, I jumped at the chance!

I got stocked up on ribbon and started making bows last month. In all, I made 415 hair bows and clips. I pulled about 55 of them for the little one on the way (you can see her stash here) and tagged the rest.

You can see my mini moo cards in the photo above. I LOVE them!!! (And I'm not being compensated to tell you that!)

I sold out of several of the bows and clips.

I wasn't sure about the felt pom clips, but they were a hit! You can find the basic technique here or here.

Collage Frames

If you're anything like me, the pictures in your frames have been there since you moved into your house. I know it's not a lot of work, but I can never seem to get my photos updated. Then there are all the cute baby announcements and photo cards that come in the mail that need a handy place to be displayed. Enter the collage frame!

I used the same basic idea as my hair bow organizer, but pictures don't clip themselves on, so I fancied up some clothespins:

There's plenty of space to add more pictures and I'm hoping this will make changing pictures out a lot easier!

Keep Those Bows Straight!

I've been drowning in bows for the past few weeks! I made over 400 bows and clips to put in a consignment sale this weekend. Of course, I had to save a few for Ellie! And by a few, I mean a few of each color. Needless to say, I had a little mountain of bows and nowhere to store them. Or nowhere cute and organized to store them. Now, you know that just wouldn't do!

I started collecting frames a while ago, my ideas for their use evolving over time. I finally had a light bulb moment and got down to business. I took my favorite frame (remember seeing it here?) and made it pretty and functional. I haven't had a chance to hang it up yet, but what you see here is more than 50 bows, all in one place with room to spare (but not much)!

The Shop Is Open!

After years of resolutions that I would open and stock an etsy shop, I am pleased to announce I have finally done so! Making room for the baby has prompted me to start getting rid of some of my supplies. I have been purging to the max! I have a few friends who've taken some of my fabric, scrapbooking and miscelleneous supplies off my hands. I've been holding a few things back for you, my dear readers (a giveaway, perhaps?). And I also have a number of things that are now listed in my shop!

Flower and Doll Pattern Search

When my sister and I were wee little things, my Grandma made us these flower buds that unfurled into a flower with a little surprise in the middle.

My surprise was a doll. Amber's was a family of three tiny bunnies.

We had SO much fun playing with these! I would love to make one, but I cannot find a pattern for this anywhere. Can anyone help me out?

100 Happy Days Challenge

I've been stuck in the house for three days and I'm coming down with a case of the Winter Blahs. I thought you might be, too. Well, we can't start 2011 out with an attitude like that, can we? Turn that frown upside-down and hop on board!I'm issuing a challenge! Remember my 100 Happy Days tag book? The idea is to record one thing (that's right - just ONE) that makes you happy each day for 100 days. It can be a big thing, like family, or a little thing, like sprinkles on cupcakes. I'm confident no matter where you're at in life, you can find just one thing a day to be happy about. How will you document your 100 Happy Days? You don't have to make a tag book. Instead, you could:
-post it on your blog
-take a picture of what makes you happy
-write it down on slips of paper and put them in a jar
-use a regular ol' journal-make a wall of "happy" post-its Want to join in? Here's how:1. Go find a mirror.
